Viridien, previously known as CGG, has been chosen by Groupement Berkine—a consortium comprising Sonatrach, Occidental Petroleum, and other international partners—to carry out the seismic imaging of a substantial 3,400 sq km high-density onshore dataset. This dataset is currently being acquired over blocks B404a and B208 in the Berkine Basin, located in Eastern Algeria.

To enhance subsurface understanding and improve the resolution of the area's intricate and faulted geology, Viridien's specialised team at their advanced Subsurface Imaging center in France will utilise an advanced imaging workflow. This approach leverages their extensive experience with similar large-scale and ultra-dense land seismic surveys, particularly in the Middle East.

Peter Whiting, Executive Vice President of Geoscience at Viridien, commented, “Viridien's selection for this prestigious project underscores our continuous advancement in imaging technology and our robust high-performance computing capabilities. Our long-standing presence in Algeria, dating back to the 1950s, along with our profound geological expertise in the Hassi Messaoud Basin and our recent successful reimaging projects in the region, solidify our position as the preferred partner to deliver optimal subsurface images for crucial field development decisions.”

Rebranding and Strategic Focus

Last month, CGG officially rebranded as Viridien following shareholder approval during the Annual General Meeting. This rebranding reflects the company's strategic repositioning as a leader in advanced technology, digital solutions, and Earth data services. Established in 1931, CGG has been at the forefront of geoscience and data science innovations. The company emphasised that the evolving landscape of technology and data challenges makes their expertise more vital than ever.

Viridien will continue to focus on its core competencies in geoscience, Earth data, and sensing & monitoring, while also expanding its reach to include high-performance computing (HPC), infrastructure monitoring, and low-carbon markets such as minerals, mining, and carbon capture and storage (CCS).

With its extensive history and forward-looking approach, Viridien aims to provide cutting-edge solutions across various industries, ensuring its continued relevance and leadership in the field of geoscience and beyond.
