EPA approves CleanConnect.ai's continuous methane monitoring system
A Colorado-based technology company has received US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approval for what it claims is the first continuous optical gas imaging system capable of detecting component-level methane leaks.
CleanConnect.ai's Leak Finder system, part of its Autonomous365 operational AI suite, has been officially recognised as an Alternative Test Method (ATM) for periodic screening under EPA regulations, marking a significant advancement in emissions monitoring technology.
Unlike traditional area-based monitoring, the system provides component-level leak detection with remote pan/tilt/zoom capabilities, allowing operators to identify precise leak locations. The company reports the technology can detect methane leaks as small as 2 kg/hr from up to 120 metres away with over 90% accuracy.
Mark Smith, CSO of CleanConnect.ai, described the approval as "a leap forward into the era of Empirical Energy," highlighting the system's ability to provide certified data for energy trade.
The technology integrates with other detection systems for liquids, fire, smoke and PPE compliance, while connecting to modelling software for real-time emissions calculations. This comprehensive approach aims to help operators navigate increasingly strict methane regulations.
David Conley, CEO of CleanConnect.ai, emphasised the practical benefits: "Operators can finally see what's happening in real time and have the data to back it up."
Industry analysts suggest this development could significantly impact how oil and gas facilities approach emissions compliance and monitoring, particularly as markets increasingly demand certified low-carbon energy products.
According to field testing data, the system has demonstrated its ability to eliminate up to 90% of emissions-related call-outs while substantially improving control room efficiency across facilities where it has been deployed.
