The Nuclear Regulatory Commission expects to approve by the end of 2026 Tennessee Valley Authority’s plan to build a small nuclear reactor, as demand for electricity surges.

The agency on Wednesday accepted an application for a construction permit from TVA, the first US utility to seek federal approval for such a project. The nation’s largest public power company is planning to build a 300-megawatt reactor developed by GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy at its Clinch River site in Tennessee.
