The U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres described the report as “code red for humanity” and urged for an end to coal energy and other high-polluting fossil fuels.

The U.N. climate panel published on Monday a report warning that the world is dangerously close to runaway warming and that human activity is to blame.

Scientists warn in a report  from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) that human activities have helped greenhouse gas levels to reach high in the atmosphere to disrupt climate for decades.

The U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres described the report as “code red for humanity” and urged for an end to coal energy and other high-polluting fossil fuels.

“The alarm bells are deafening,” Guterres said in a statement. “This report must sound a death knell for coal and fossil fuels, before they destroy our planet.

The report said that unless an  immediate, quick and large-scale action is taken to reduce fossil fuels emissions, the average global temperature will cross the 1.5-degree Celsius above pre-industrial levels,  which means an end to the ambition of the 2015 Paris climate agreement.
