Fire breaks at Zahrani facility, under control
A fire that broke out at Zahrani oil installations has been "mostly extinguished," said the Lebanese news agency NNA on Monday which also said that the cause of the fire remains unknown.
While the firefighters has been putting down the fire, the army has been called to evacuate the residents of surrounding the affected area. There has been no casualties reported yet.
The fire comes just days after the Zahrani plant and and Deir Ammar, were shut down as the country ran out of fuel.
According to the country's main power provider Electricite du Liban (EDL) the shutdown reduced total power supply to below 270MW, which "directly affected the stability of the power network and led to its complete outage, with no possibility of resuming operations in the meantime." The Lebanese army provided the plants with gasoil from its fuel reserves which could help power them for a few hours a day.
The World Bank said that Lebanon is "possibly" one of three most severe economic and financial crises of modern history.
