ExxonMobil will have five speakers participating at Gastech, focusing on the changed global energy landscape, the new LNG trading paradigm and the energy transition.

Economies around the world are seeking to diversify their energy supplies and meet their climate goals, and that’s a key reason why ExxonMobil is growing its LNG portfolio. Ahead of Gastech 2022 in Milan, Energy Connects caught up with the US energy giant on the key role the company intends to play in the energy transition and why Gastech is such an important show to connect with the industry.

What is ExxonMobil’s presence at Gastech 2022?
ExxonMobil will have five speakers participating at Gastech. Peter Clarke, Senior Vice President, ExxonMobil Upstream Company, will be speaking on facing the realities of a changed global energy landscape.

Our Vice President Global LNG Marketing and Chairman LNG Market Development, Andrew Barry, will be speaking on a strategic leadership panel centered on the new LNG trading paradigm. Tze San Koh, President, China Gas Marketing, who also leads our Power Play initiative (more on that in a moment!), will participate on an inclusion and diversity panel. Camille Casey will present a paper on the energy transition.

And lastly, Mark Mikhaeil will present his abstract on compact absorption-based gas dehydration and CO2 removal. We’re thrilled to have such broad representation at Gastech, covering a variety of topics.

What kinds of things are top of mind for ExxonMobil right now?
ExxonMobil is working to meet the world’s growing demand for energy and products essential for modern life, while lowering emissions and addressing the challenge of climate change. We expect LNG to play an increasingly important role as growing economies around the world seek to diversify their energy supplies and meet their climate goals, and we are growing our portfolio.

Our LCS (Low Carbon Solutions) organisation is focused on reducing emissions from ExxonMobil’s own operations and products, while also leveraging the skills, knowledge and scale of the corporation to commercialise low-carbon opportunities for broad deployment around the world, including carbon capture and storage (CCS), hydrogen and low-emission fuels.

How is ExxonMobil helping meet supply / bring more supply and adjust to customer needs in a net zero future?
We are working with our customers to find solutions to help bring on more supply. We are well-positioned to contribute to this endeavor and deliver LNG from large high quality resources and facilities from both our ExxonMobil operated projects and from the strategic JVs we participate in around the globe.

Ultimately, we plan to double our portfolio by 2030. ExxonMobil is looking at opportunities across the value chain, including downstream of regasification terminals, working with our customers and host nations to look at various solutions such as LNG-to-power with CCS, LNG to blue hydrogen or small-scale LNG distribution.

As we pursue these energy sources, there will be an increase in the critical role of long term relationships between producers and consumers. While buyers and sellers will continue to seek an element of flexibility in their energy supply arrangements, long-term contracts will underpin the new investments required to expand traditional value chains to include CCS and hydrogen.

Who from ExxonMobil will be attending Gastech?
Representatives from our LNG and LCS organisations are coming from around the globe to attend – from our trading group to market development to country offices. Stop by our booth and say hello!

What else can we expect to see from ExxonMobil at Gastech?
We will be announcing our Power Play Award winners at Gastech, our fourth year to hold such awards! The Power Play was started as a way for women in the LNG value chain to network and do business, and we are so proud of the way it has grown not only for women, but the men who empower and support them.

We have three award categories this year for Power Play: the Pioneer, recognising innovation/technology, the Ambassador, recognising outstanding leadership and the Rising Star, recognising an up and comer in the industry.

Why is diversity and inclusion such an important initiative for ExxonMobil?
ExxonMobil’s strategic talent objective is to have a diverse and engaged workforce, and to provide every individual unrivalled opportunities for personal and professional growth with impactful work meeting society’s essential needs.

Earlier this year, ExxonMobil published our “Investing in People” chapter of the 2022 Sustainability Report, where we outlined five goals: a place to thrive; attract the best talent; enable employees to reach their full potential; develop future leaders and harness diversity.

What do you hope to get out of Gastech in 2022?
We’re looking forward to productive and meaningful conversations with our peers, customers and government officials.
