IRENA: renewables are the new frontier of energy security

In an exclusive studio interview at the World Utilities Congress 2025, Chiranjib Sengupta sat down with Francesco La Camera, Director General of IRENA, to discuss the energy transition and the pace of progress with tripling renewables capacity by 2030 and increasing energy efficiency by 2%.  Francesco highlighted that while 92% of the new power capacity installed globally last year was renewables, the pace of progress is not at the scale and at speed needed to be in line with the 2030 goal. He also spoke about the critical role of renewables in ensuring energy security, and how utilities can balance the need for both energy security and climate priorities.
