Gastech 2022: Sempra sees a bright future for gas and LNG
In our next exclusive studio interview from Gastech 2022, Julian Walker talked with Dan Brouillette, President of Sempra Infrastructure, about what he sees as a bright future for gas and LNG. Dan also touched on other potential areas of interest like the production of hydrogen or storage of ammonia.
Here are some key takeaways that Dan highlighted during his interview; we learn why he is excited for LNG opportunities around the world and how Sempra are looking beyond natural gas to hydrogen production among other things.
What do you see as the greatest opportunities in the LNG sector?
“It really is. Natural gas has a very bright future in Europe, as well as around the world. It is a transitional fuel in many respects for developing countries, but it is also a baseload power for many other countries. We at Sempra are excited about the opportunities we see around the world.”
How are you looking beyond natural gas?
“I mean, as we think about the facilities that we have at Cameron LNG, we obviously have other opportunities, their potential for production of hydrogen, perhaps storage of hydrogen, ammonia as well. And when we look at our Port Arthur facility, which is a big site we have approximately 3,000 acres there. We can expand that quite a bit with LNG production in the future but we can also potentially think about hydrogen production there as well. We see enormous opportunities well beyond natural gas.”
Do you see greater industry collaboration on future technologies?
“I think there will be standardisation of technologies over time. As we think about hydrogen, we must think about the potential uses of hydrogen. We think about the basic analysis and colour schemes that we have come up with for all of these projects, blue versus green versus turquoise versus other colours. I think the industry can probably come together and begin a process of putting together perhaps what is a quantifiable carbon intensity number, rather than using green and blue and other colours. We look forward to partnering with our industry colleagues to do exactly that.”
