Beijing Energy Congress 2027: Powering global collaboration

In October, more than thirty senior energy leaders gathered in Beijing for a high-level strategic planning meeting chaired by Dr Lu Ruquan, President of CNPC Economics & Technology Research Institute (ETRI).

Around the table sat decisionmakers from CNOOC, SINOPEC, PipeChina, Towngas, ENN, PETRONAS, Woodside Energy, Huawei, the World Nuclear Association, and the China Beijing Green Exchange (CBGE) – a rare alignment of state-owned enterprises, international partners, and technology pioneers united by a common goal: to shape the foundations of the Beijing Energy Congress, taking place from 13–15 January 2027.

The discussions reflected both China’s domestic transformation and its growing global influence. As the world’s largest energy consumer, leading renewables investor, and top LNG importer, China sits at the centre of the global energy balance.

Its industrial modernisation and rapid innovation in clean technologies are reshaping the energy landscape – from record LNG procurement and AI-enabled grids to the world’s largest electric-vehicle fleet. This transformation is unfolding as the Middle East continues to expand its leadership in reliable supply, downstream investment, and decarbonisation technology. Together, these two regions are defining the future contours of global energy security, trade, and innovation.

A strategic moment in the energy transformation

By 2027, global energy markets will be entering a decisive phase. Hydrocarbons will remain the backbone of the world’s energy mix, supporting growth as electrification, renewables, and low-carbon solutions accelerate.

LNG will continue to play a critical role as a flexible baseload fuel underpinning security and industrial development, particularly across Asia. At the same time, AI, automation, and digital infrastructure are transforming how energy is produced, transported, and consumed – driving new levels of efficiency and resilience.

In this evolving landscape, China’s actions – from cleaner upstream production and CCUS deployment to digital grid optimisation and electrified mobility – will profoundly influence global supply-demand dynamics. Closer coordination between producers, consumers, and investors will be essential to ensure energy security, affordability, and sustainability move forward together.

Against this backdrop, dmg events and Beijing Capital Group Exhibitions & Events (BCGEE) are launching the Beijing Energy Congress as one of the key annual gatherings to advance global dialogue, technology exchange, and collaboration.

Positioned at the start of the year, the Congress will help shape Asia’s energy priorities in step with the implementation of China’s 15th Five-Year Plan, while strengthening ties between the Middle East’s producers and financiers, Asia’s manufacturing and technology leaders, and global energy markets — all at the forefront of innovation, investment, and transformation.

As one participant at the October meeting noted, “The energy transition cannot be achieved in isolation. China’s scale, technology, and investment are essential to global success – but so too is its collaboration with the world.”

That message lies at the heart of the Beijing Energy Congress and its theme, Driving Global Energy Transformation through Collaboration, Technology and Innovation – a vision that connects markets, sectors, and stakeholders across the global energy value chain in pursuit of shared progress.

From planning to partnership

The October meeting underscored a shared recognition that the future of energy depends on collaboration. As markets grow increasingly connected and interdependent, senior representatives from across the energy ecosystem – from national energy companies and utilities to innovators in hydrogen, digitalisation, and nuclear – voiced a common goal: to strengthen cooperation between China and international partners, advancing secure, sustainable, and affordable energy for all.

Dr Lu Ruquan described the Congress as a “window for international collaboration” aligned with China’s evolving policy priorities. Key themes under discussion included LNG and gas security, grid modernisation, AI-driven efficiency, hydrogen and ammonia, CCUS, and green finance – all central to building a resilient, diversified, and low-carbon energy system.

Participants also emphasised the need for transparent carbon markets, investment confidence, and deeper public-private partnerships – priorities that will shape the BEC agenda in the months ahead.

From Beijing to the world

The Beijing Energy Congress 2027 will connect China’s domestic expertise with international partners across hydrocarbons, LNG and natural gas, hydrogen and ammonia, renewables, digitalisation, finance, and infrastructure. It will highlight breakthrough technologies redefining energy trade and demonstrate how collaboration across regions can anchor both security and sustainability in a rapidly changing world.

As the global industry gathers in Abu Dhabi this week, one message rings clear from Beijing: the future of energy will be shaped by stronger collaboration between the Middle East and China – and with partners across Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Americas.

Together, these regions represent the engines of growth, investment, and innovation – and through closer cooperation, they can power a more connected, secure, and sustainable global energy future.

The Beijing Energy Congress 2027 aims to be that bridge, uniting leaders, technologies, and ideas to power a shared global future.
