The Hynet cluster is one of the two picked by the UK government for fast track, and the project will help unlock a low carbon future for NorthWest England and North Wales.

British engineering company Kent has won design work on a blue hydrogen project at HyNet, the UK’s leading industrial decarbonisation cluster, the company said on Monday.

The cluster is one of the two picked by the UK government for fast track, and the project will help unlock a low carbon future for NorthWest England and North Wales, producing and distributing low carbon hydrogen to replace the fossil fuels used in industry, transport, and homes, and capture and store carbon dioxide.

Vertex Hydrogen will design, develop and building the UK’s first large scale, low carbon hydrogen production plant that will be a core part of HyNet.

As a part of the new contract win, Kent will optimise the design prepared for the FEED phase to meet the latest requirements for the project, update the cost estimates, advise on the planning application and consents and provide the technical tender documentation for delivery contractors, the company said.

“We are excited to be a part of this transition and believe we have the technical and engineering skills to help deliver the project. Our ambition is to build long-term relationships with businesses that share our values and vision and together help make a difference,” Matt Wills, Market Director, Low Carbon and Onshore Projects at Kent, said in a statement.

“This win is a testament to our ongoing relationship with Vertex Hydrogen. In addition, it cements our position as a leading engineering and construction company in the energy transition sector worldwide,” he added.

With the new project, Kent’s awards have hit $400 million in the first quarter of 2022 after major wins across the globe, the company said.
