Google commits $25bn to US data centre expansion amid AI surge
Google has announced a massive $25 billion investment in data centres and artificial intelligence infrastructure across America's largest electricity grid over the next two years, as the tech giant races to meet soaring demand for AI services.
The investment will focus on the PJM region, which covers 13 states across the mid-Atlantic and parts of the Midwest and South, including the world's largest data centre market in northern Virginia.
Ruth Porat, President and Chief Investment Officer at Alphabet and Google, unveiled the plans at the Pennsylvania Energy & Innovation Summit in Pittsburgh on Tuesday, alongside President Donald Trump and Senator Dave McCormick.
"On behalf of Google, I am pleased to be here in Pittsburgh to announce that Google is investing more than $25 billion across states in this critical PJM region over the next two years," Porat said.
The announcement comes as the PJM Interconnection struggles to keep pace with rising electricity demand from data centres and industry, highlighting the enormous energy requirements of AI technology.
As part of the broader energy strategy, Google has also committed $3 billion to modernise two hydropower facilities in Pennsylvania's Lancaster County through a 20-year agreement with Brookfield Asset Management.
The deal represents the world's largest corporate clean power agreement for hydroelectricity, with Google securing rights to purchase up to 3,000 megawatts of carbon-free hydroelectric capacity across the United States.
"At Google, we're dedicated to responsibly growing the digital infrastructure that powers daily life for people, communities and businesses," said Amanda Peterson Corio, Head of Data Centre Energy at Google. "This collaboration with Brookfield is a significant step forward, ensuring clean energy supply in the PJM region where we operate."
The investment package also includes AI Works for America, a training programme launching in Pennsylvania to teach essential AI skills to workers and students. Google has pledged to offer free AI training to all small businesses in Pennsylvania.
The announcements were part of a broader summit that saw companies commit over $90 billion in data centre, energy, and AI infrastructure investments.
