Italian energy company Eni and SEA, the Milan Malpensa and Milan Linate airports operator, said on Wednesday that they have reached an agreement to promote decarbonisation in the two airports by receiving Eni’s biofuels (SAFs).

Eni began supplying biofuels for private flights in December 2021. With today’s announcement the company will supply to commercial flights as well and include the supply of pure HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) biofuel for ground transportation.

The companies said that the agreement will help SEA achieve its net zero target of emissions (scope 1, scope 2 and scope 3) by 2030 instead of 2050.

Eni is the second-largest producer of HVO biofuel in Europe; they want to produce around 200,000 tonnes per year by 2024 and to double production by 2030.

" Eni is building on the potential of sustainable biofuels for aviation, as they currently represent the only immediately available solution to decarbonise the sector,” said Umberto Carrara, Director of Green/Traditional Refining and Market at Eni.

Eni began producing SAFs a few months ago with a mix containing 0.5 percent of used cooking oil. Its technology  EcofiningTM helps it produce SAFs from waste and plant-based raw materials.

The company wants to develop Eni Biojet which will be made exclusively from waste materials such as UCO or animal fats and can be used in a blend with conventional jet fuel of up to 50 percent, the company said in a statement.
