TotalEnergies greenlights second phase development for offshore Brazil project
In a significant move aimed at further harnessing Brazil's abundant offshore oil resources, TotalEnergies, alongside operator Petrobras and their consortium partners, have officially given the green light for the second development phase of the Atapu and Sépia fields.
Situated in the prolific pre-salt Santos Basin, these fields hold immense potential for bolstering the country's oil production.
Nicolas Terraz, President Exploration & Production of TotalEnergies, expressed enthusiasm over the decision, highlighting that, “Brazil will soon account for more than 200,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boepd) in equity production for the company.”
Enhanced production capacities
The Atapu field, which commenced production in 2020 through the P-70 Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) unit, has seen robust output with a capacity of 150,000 barrels of oil per day (bopd).
The upcoming phase, Atapu-2, will witness the deployment of a new FPSO boasting a capacity of 225,000 bopd. TotalEnergies holds a 15% interest in the Atapu field, partnering with Petrobras (65.7%, operator), Shell (16.7%), Petrogal (1.7%), and PPSA (0.9%).
Similarly, the Sépia field, which commenced production in 2021 via the Carioca FPSO unit, has exhibited promising performance with a production capacity of 180,000 bopd.
Sépia-2, the next phase, will see the installation of a new FPSO matching Atapu-2's capacity of 225,000 bopd. TotalEnergies holds a 16.9% interest in the Sépia field, collaborating with Petrobras (55.3%, operator), Petronas (12.7%), QatarEnergy (12.7%), and Petrogal (2.4%).
Anticipated to commence production by 2029, both floating production storage and offloading (FPSOs) are designed with a focus on minimising greenhouse gas emissions.
Their all-electric configuration, coupled with technologies such as waste heat recovery, closed flare, and variable speed drive for compressors and pumps, underscores TotalEnergies' commitment to sustainable energy practices.
