Qatar to Fund More Gas For Syria to Boost Power Output
(Bloomberg) -- Qatar agreed to fund an increase in natural gas supplies to Syria to boost electricity generation in the war-torn country.
The piped supplies from Azerbaijan will be delivered via Turkey. They will increase to 3.4 million cubic meters a day from 2 million announced in March, according to a statement from the Qatari government. That’s part of an effort to boost Syria’s power generation by as much as 800 megawatts.
“Heartfelt thanks to Qatar for fully funding a vital gas initiative for Syria,” Tom Barrack, the US ambassador to Turkey and President Donald Trump’s special envoy for Syria, said on X.
Overnight, the US unveiled a 41% tariff on Syria as part of Trump’s revised global trade plan. While that’s the world’s highest rate, exports to the US from Syria — which has been under American sanctions for decades, though Trump recently said he will end them — are minimal.
The Qatari initiative is expected to improve daily power supply by 40% for more than five million people, as well as for commercial and industrial zones, according to the statement. It brings the value of the Qatar Fund for Development’s total contribution to Syria’s electricity sector to over $760 million.
The second phase of Qatar’s support to electricity generation in Syria will last for a year, providing the supplies through Azerbaijan and Turkey, the Qatar Fund said.
