Cutting flares, curbing methane: World Bank targets emissions in emerging economies
In an exclusive interview with Energy Connects at the Japan Energy Summit and Exhibition 2025, Zubin Bamji, Manager of Global Flaring and Methane Reduction (GFMR) Partnership at the World Bank, laid out the Bank’s strategic push to tackle gas flaring and methane emissions in developing economies. Zubin highlighted a dual-track approach: delivering technical assistance to help governments and national oil companies build regulatory frameworks and capacity, while also mobilising financing to unlock methane and flare reduction projects. With a focus on state-owned entities in countries with limited resources, he explained that the World Bank aims to close the gap between climate ambition and implementation, where emissions are highest and support is most urgently needed.
