JAPEX charts global path to net-zero by 2050 with natural gas at the core

In an exclusive interview with Energy Connects at the Japan Energy Summit and Exhibition 2025, Dr Tomomi Yamada, Managing Executive Officer and President of Overseas Business Division II at JAPEX, outlined the company’s strategic shift toward global expansion and long-term sustainability. Founded in 1955 to explore domestic oil and gas, JAPEX is now positioning itself as a key international player with a bold dual mission: to ensure a stable energy supply and achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Dr Tomomi highlighted a major milestone in this journey – JAPEX’s target to reduce Scope 1 and 2 carbon intensity by 40% by 2030 compared to 2019 levels. He also emphasised the critical role of natural gas as a transitional fuel, central to Japan’s energy resilience and future energy mix and explains how JAPEX is leveraging overseas projects and partnerships to drive innovation, sustainability and growth on a global scale.
