LNG, natural gas and innovation: powering a just and sustainable transition
Natural gas—when supported by innovation, responsible operations, and long-term vision—is a powerful enabler of the just transition. At Eni, we are committed to turning that potential into measurable impact: cleaner energy, stronger economies, and a resilient planet.
The role of natural gas in a sustainable energy future
In the global pursuit of a sustainable and inclusive energy future, balancing climate ambition, energy security, and affordability is essential. At Eni, we see natural gas not just as a “bridge” fuel, but as a foundational pillar enabling large-scale decarbonisation—supported by integrated technologies and robust infrastructure.
Natural gas, the cleanest fossil fuel, plays a critical role in replacing coal and complementing renewables. It ensures grid reliability, especially during the energy transition. For Eni, gas already accounts for over 60% of upstream production and remains central to our Net-Zero strategy, particularly when paired with CCUS, hydrogen, and bio-solutions.
Technology and innovation driving the transition
Technological innovation is at the core of Eni’s decarbonisation strategy. Among the most impactful tools is Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage (CCUS), essential for hard-to-abate sectors. Our Ravenna CCS hub in Italy—the country’s first large-scale carbon storage initiative—is operational and will reach a CO₂ injection capacity of 4 million tonnes annually by 2030, with plans to scale up beyond 16 million tonnes.
We are also leading development of the HyNet cluster in the UK, which will initially store 4.5 million tonnes of CO₂ per year, with a total storage potential of around 200 million tonnes.
Digitalisation is another key enabler. Eni uses high-performance computing and AI across its operations to boost efficiency, improve forecasting, and reduce emissions. These technologies—together with CCS and floating LNG—are already transforming how we deliver energy.
Key projects and milestones across our global portfolio
Eni is advancing a diverse set of projects that strengthen its role in the global gas landscape.
In Argentina, the Argentina LNG (ARGLNG) project, in collaboration with YPF, aims to become the continent’s first large-scale LNG export hub, based on the Vaca Muerta basin, targeting 30 MTPA by 2030.
In Indonesia, we are fast-tracking development in the Kutei Basin, building on the success of the Geng North discovery. This positions Eni to meet domestic demand and explore LNG export opportunities in Southeast Asia.
In Qatar, Eni is participating in the North Field East and South developments, two of the most strategic global LNG expansion projects. These will boost global supply while upholding high environmental standards.
In Mozambique, the Coral North floating LNG project will add around 3.5 MTPA of capacity to existing infrastructure. Currently in FEED phase, it represents a low-carbon development model for offshore gas.
In sub-Saharan Africa, the Congo LNG project sets new benchmarks for modular development, with the second FLNG unit nearing completion. Designed with zero routine flaring and emissions mitigation, it will soon reach 3 MTPA capacity.
In Cyprus, we are progressing the Cronos and Zeus discoveries, enhancing regional and European energy security and consolidating our position in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Accelerating the energy transition with new solutions
Eni’s innovation agenda is focused on scalable solutions for emissions reduction. Our CCS platform offers comprehensive services for CO₂ capture, transport, and long-term storage, designed for flexibility across regions and industries.
In LNG, we are developing modular FLNG solutions for rapid deployment in emerging markets, reducing time to market while ensuring environmental performance. We are also investing in bio-LNG—a renewable, low-emission option for hard-to-electrify sectors.
Circular energy models, including heat recovery and infrastructure repurposing, are further improving system efficiency. At the same time, we are expanding our LNG trading capabilities, particularly in Asia. Long-term supply contracts and portfolio flexibility position Eni as a reliable partner for fast-growing economies seeking cleaner energy.
Our commitment at Gastech 2025
At Eni, we believe collaboration is essential for an effective energy transition. Events like Gastech 2025 are key platforms for knowledge sharing and building partnerships. But our main focus remains delivery: implementing credible technologies, enabling deep decarbonisation, and ensuring secure, low-emission energy for a growing global population.
