Singapore's energy transition: Paving the way for a low-carbon future

Having set strong objectives towards decarbonisation by 2030, Singapore is likely to become a world leader in low-carbon hydrogen projects and play an essential role in financing the energy industry transition in Southeast Asia, where energy demand is expected to have tripled between 2013 and 2040.

Singapore is the commercial energy hub of the Asia-Pacific region, as a trading hub, a financer of energy development, and as a low-carbon energy producer itself. It is within this context that Gastech 2023, the world's leading gathering for natural gas, LNG, hydrogen, and climate technologies will take place in Singapore.

Having set strong objectives towards decarbonisation by 2030, Singapore is likely to become a world leader in low-carbon hydrogen projects and play an essential role in financing the energy industry transition in Southeast Asia, where energy demand is expected to have tripled between 2013 and 2040.

Domestically, Singapore is also making significant strides in its own energy transition, primarily through increased investment in lower-carbon energy infrastructure, including LNG.  Singapore is also uniquely positioned to build upon its status and become a regional centre for green technology.

This is an important story for the international community to follow, as investment in LNG infrastructure is helping Singapore to meet its energy needs of today without compromising its ambitions for a low-carbon future – a balance that every country needs to achieve.

Now, with over 90 percent of its electricity generated from natural gas, the next phase of the country’s energy transition is well underway, with government targets aimed at having renewables make up 8% of its energy mix by 2025, and 15% by 2030.

The deployment of new climate technology solutions across the entire energy value chain will be a central theme of Gastech 2023. As industry leaders, policymakers, and investors gather in Singapore, discussions will focus on the transformative impact of landmark climate legislation on the driving climate friendly technologies.

As the world continues to contend with the challenges of climate change, Singapore's energy transition serves as a reminder that it is possible to achieve a sustainable future through concerted collaboration between investors, innovators, policy makers and industry.
