Sapphire Technologies, a leading developer and manufacturer of modular power generation equipment, has successfully closed its $18 million Series C financing round. The investment round was led by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, marking a significant milestone in Sapphire’s growth journey, alongside continued backing from existing investors including Equinor Ventures, Cooper and Company, and Energy Capital Ventures.

The fresh infusion of capital, the company said, will be instrumental in scaling Sapphire’s operations and supporting its global expansion strategy. Specifically, the company plans to leverage the funds to grow its recently inaugurated manufacturing facility in Cypress, California, and to further increase the installed base of its innovative FreeSpin in-line turboexpanders.

Sapphire Technologies’ flagship product, the FreeSpin turboexpander generator, plays a vital role in energy recovery. By capturing energy that is typically lost during pressure reduction processes such as those occurring in natural gas wells, transmission pipelines, and other energy infrastructure the system converts waste pressure into clean, reliable electricity. This carbon-free power solution helps infrastructure owners meet growing energy demand while reducing their carbon footprint, without relying on additional fuel sources or producing direct emissions.

The expansion will strengthen Sapphire’s position in existing strongholds such as Japan and also extend the application of its technology into new and emerging energy markets.

“Japan is one of the most important global markets for Sapphire,” said Freddie Sarhan, CEO of Sapphire Technologies. “We are deepening our commitment to our Japanese clients. This partnership will accelerate the deployment of waste pressure power generation equipment across natural gas infrastructure, supporting the world’s surging energy demand.”

Ricky Sakai, Senior Vice President, Investment & Business Development, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries America, emphasized the importance of this collaboration, stating: “Technologies such as FreeSpin have the potential to play a meaningful role in the energy transition by converting existing pressure into electricity without additional fuel or direct emissions. Our investment supports the next phase of field deployments in key markets intending to add dependable capacity where demand is growing and lowering carbon intensity.”
