Earlier this year Singapore and the US agreed to boost cooperation on civil nuclear issues.

Singapore has appointed a UK-based engineering firm to study if the city-state can safely deploy nuclear power technology.

Consultancy Mott MacDonald Ltd. will study the commercial readiness of small modular reactors and other nuclear technologies for the tiny gas-dependent island-nation, according to a statement from the Energy Market Authority on Tuesday.

“Any decision to deploy nuclear energy will need to be carefully considered against its safety, reliability, affordability, and environmental sustainability in Singapore’s context,” the EMA said.

The move comes as countries around the world look to atomic power to reach emissions targets and fuel power-hungry industries such as artificial intelligence. In Southeast Asia, nations including Thailand, Vietnam and Philippines are seeking to embrace the low-carbon energy source.
