TA’ZIZ, the pioneering chemicals and transition fuels ecosystem in Al Ruwais Industrial City, Abu Dhabi, announced the award of a construction contract for its 1 million tons per annum (mtpa) low-carbon ammonia production facility.

Fertiglobe, a partner of TA’ZIZ, Mitsui & Co. and GS Energy Corporation, awarded the construction contract to Tecnimont S.p.A (MAIRE Group).

Construction is slated to commence in the third quarter of 2024, with operational activities earmarked to commence in 2027. A considerable portion of the construction contract value is anticipated to circulate back into the UAE’s economy under ADNOC’s In-Country Value (ICV) program.

Advancing sustainability through low-carbon intensity

A preliminary life cycle assessment study indicates that the initial phase of the plant will yield ammonia with 50% lower carbon intensity compared to traditional methods. Subsequently, the facility will further curtail its carbon footprint through the capture and sequestration of carbon dioxide emissions.

Mashal Saoud Al-Kindi, CEO of TA’ZIZ, emphasized the pivotal role of ammonia as a transition fuel, citing its versatile applications across various energy sectors. Al-Kindi stated, “This ammonia production facility, which is set to produce enough low-carbon ammonia to power hundreds of thousands of homes annually, is core to the mission of TA’ZIZ to boost local industry supply chains, enhance ICV and catalyse manufacturing capabilities in the UAE - all with a focus on sustainability.”

The inauguration of TA’ZIZ’s first phase prioritizes the domestic production of six vital chemicals, laying the groundwork for the localized manufacturing of numerous end-products within the UAE for the first time.

This ambitious phase is forecasted to inject a multi-billion-dollar investment into the nation’s GDP and engender thousands of employment opportunities over the next two decades.

With a strategic mandate to position the UAE as a global leader in the chemicals sector, TA’ZIZ has embarked on the design phase for an expansive, multi-billion-dollar expansion project. This endeavour aims to more than double the production capacity of Phase 1 while intensifying the focus on decarbonization through the integration of clean power and carbon capture technologies.
