The German utilities association BDEW said on Thursday that the federal government should declare the early warning level in the national gas emergency plan, amid signs its gas import situation may worsen.

"There are concrete and serious indications that the gas supply situation is about to deteriorate," BDEW said in a statement on their website.

They added that with the latest announcement that future gas deliveries will have to be paid for in rubles, an impact on gas deliveries cannot be ruled out.

The association said that the declaration of early warning means the government can prepare for any shortages.
