Despite being the world's biggest producer and consumer of coal, China has faced power supply crunch due to distortion in the coal market.

China's state planner will conduct a "clean up and rectification" work on coal storage sites, it said in a statement.

The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) said that they will audit the many unlicensed coal storage sites in areas of Shanxi, Shaanxi and Inner Mongolia,  "making it convenient for illegal traders to hoard coal," and "seriously disrupting" the operations in the market.

The NDRC added that those three areas must establish a reporting system for both legal and compliant coal storage sites.
