CNNC's announcement comes four years after the original plan.

China has started construction of the first commercial onshore nuclear project using their locally designed "Linglong One" which is a small modular reactor (SMR) design, the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) said on Tuesday. This announcement comes four years after the original plan.

The Linglong One technology is also known as the ACP100, was the first SMR to be approved by the International Atomic Energy Agency  (IAEA) in 2016. Each unit of this SMR can generate a capacity of 125 megawatts (MW) power.

The technology was designed to complement the third-generation 1,170-MW "Hualong One" reactors. SMRs are cheaper and quicker to build compared to traditional reactors. They can also be deployed on remote sites.

The company has originally aimed to build the project at the Changjiang nuclear reactor complex on the island province of Hainan in 2017, but it has been subject to regulatory delays.
