Orsted A/S has filed a legal challenge against the Trump administration’s move to suspend the lease of a wind project that’s near completion off Rhode Island.

The Danish firm and its joint-venture partner Skyborn Renewables said the US government’s order “violates applicable law,” according to a statement dated Jan. 1. The firms will call for the lease suspension to be halted until the court hands down a final verdict.

The US in December suspended leases for five wind farms under construction off the East Coast, dealing a further blow to an industry repeatedly thwarted by President Donald Trump’s pivot back to fossil fuels. The Interior Department has cited concerns over national security as massive turbines may interfere with radar systems.

The Revolution Wind project off Rhode Island faces substantial harm from a continuation of the lease suspension order, Orsted said in the statement. The project is now 87% complete and is expected to be ready to deliver power to American homes in 2026.

Orsted had earlier said it was considering “all options” including legal action in response to the work suspension orders. Other major developers including Equinor ASA are engaging with US authorities over security concerns tied to offshore wind projects.

Shares in Orsted dropped nearly 35% last year as it dealt with the fallout from the Trump administration’s attacks on the wind sector.
