Study finds biomass fuel "significantly reduce" emissions from ships
A study conducted by Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) researchers, funded by Department of Energy’s Bioenergy Technologies Office and Department of Transportation's Maritime Administration, showed that substituting biofuel could significantly reduce the amount of greenhouse gases and other pollutants entering the air from ocean shipping.
The study found that biomass based fuel could reduce these emissions between 40 and 93 percent when compared to conventional heavy fuel oil.
The shipping industry is a large consumer of petroleum fuel. Carbon emissions from ships grew almost 10 percent between 2012 and 2018.
