Eskom to have Renewable Energy Tariff
South Africa’s Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd.,is starting a pilot program to allow businesses to buy green energy without owning a renewable energy generator or entering into long-term agreements.
“The Renewable Energy Tariff is designed to provide a cost-effective and flexible option for Eskom customers to consume renewable power," the company said in a statement on its website.
The program will last for two years, ending in March 2023. During that time, Eskom will offer a maximum of 300 gigawatt-hours per annum to customers supplied directly by the utility.
Customers will have an option to select what percentage of their current electricity usage to be green. By the end of the program, they must decide on whether to submit the tariff for formal approval.
Eskom generates most of South Africa’s power, using coal. It is transitioning to greenerg energy with some work from renewables including wind and hydro.
