The British government will review "green tariffs" that will help determine whether the ongoing system is fit or requires changes.

The UK government said that it will review green retail electricity tariffs, that are provided by energy companies, due to concerns that these companies are overstating the level of environmentally friendly their products are.

"I want people to know that when they sign up to a green tariff, they are investing in companies that make a conscious choice to invest in renewable energy," said Anne-Marie Trevelyan, minister of state for energy and clean growth.

This review will look into whether the current system is transparent. Nonetheless, a closer look at the rules around what can be called a green tariff. According to the government there are around 9 million households in Britain that are on green tariffs.

The review will help determine whether the ongoing system is fit or requires changes. Moreover, energy companies will have to provide more details on the source of their renewable power.
