Iran Says Next Round of US Nuclear Talks Scheduled for Sunday
(Bloomberg) -- The US and Iran will hold their fourth round of talks over the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program this weekend in the Omani capital of Muscat, as the Trump administration threatens to ramp up pressure on Tehran with sanctions.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told Iranian state TV that the Omani government, which is mediating the talks, has been in touch with Tehran and Washington. Araghchi said a time for the talks has not yet been fixed, and that he’ll travel to Saudi Arabia and Qatar on Saturday, a few days before Trump is expected to visit the Gulf-Arab countries.
President Donald Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkoff, will travel to Oman for the talks on Sunday, with both direct and indirect discussions expected, according to a person familiar with the situation, who asked not to be identified.
The two sides want to broker a new deal that limits Iran’s nuclear activity in exchange for sanctions relief. Iran has insisted that its nuclear program is peaceful while maintaining that its ability to enrich uranium is non-negotiable.
The negotiations faced uncertainty last week, after a meeting that was supposed to take place in Europe was canceled and US officials denied they confirmed their participation. The Trump administration also imposed fresh sanctions targeting Iran’s oil industry, and Trump threatened secondary penalties on countries and companies buying Iranian oil.
