Equinor and partners find new oil and gas discovery near Troll field
Equinor, alongside Vår Energi and INPEX Idemitsu Norge, has confirmed a fresh oil and gas discovery in the Fram area of the North Sea, approximately nine kilometres north of the established Troll field.
The discovery stems from exploration well 35/11-31 S, drilled under production licence PL 090 by the COSL Innovator rig. This well encountered petroleum across two separate reservoirs: one containing both oil and gas, and the other comprising gas only.
Collectively, the resources are estimated between 0.1 and 1.1 million standard cubic metres, equating to roughly 0.6–6.9 million barrels of oil equivalent. The reservoir quality varies from moderate to very good. The discovery has been provisionally named F-South.
Geir Sørtveit, Equinor’s Senior Vice-President for Exploration & Production West on the Norwegian continental shelf, said:
“These are discoveries in an interesting area with a well-developed infrastructure. In recent years, we have made several discoveries in the neighbourhood, and we plan to further explore the area. We believe that we may encounter more, both oil and gas.”
The licence holders,Equinor (45 %), Vår Energi (40 %) and INPEX Idemitsu Norge (15 %), are evaluating the feasibility of tying F-South back into existing or planned infrastructure.
This marks another addition to a series of discoveries in the Troll-Fram region since 2019, including names such as Echino South, Swisher, Røver North, Blasto, Toppand, Kveikje, and others, which collectively underpin development plans like Fram South.
