Verition Fund Management LLC has hired a trader from Millennium Capital Partners LLP to create an energy team for European natural gas, power, carbon and oil, according to a person with direct knowledge of the information.

Alex Mouturat will join Verition as a portfolio manager to build his own team, or pod, after spending three years at Millennium, the person said, asking not to be identified because the information hasn’t been made public.

Most recently, Mouturat was a senior portfolio manager at Millennium. He has also worked as a power trader at EDF Trading and Engie SA, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Verition didn’t respond to requests for comment. Millennium declined to comment.

The Greenwich, Connecticut-based hedge fund wants to build a diversified portfolio across asset classes. Verition has offices in different parts of the US, as well as in London, Singapore, Dubai and Hong Kong, according to its website.

Despite a turbulent year for most commodity players, hedge funds remain drawn to energy trading, including in European gas and power. Expectations of new liquefied natural gas supply and the rapid growth of renewables are set to sustain volatility and create fresh trading opportunities.
