Methane a potent gas can warm the climate more than 80 times higher than carbon dioxide.

The Biden administration announced the launch of a wide ranging plan to reduce methane emissions, a potent greenhouse gas that contributes significantly to global warming, in an attempt to lead the world in climate affairs.

The plan was announced Tuesday in which  Biden pledged during the summit to work with the European Union and around 100 other nations to reduce global methane emissions by 30 percent by 2030.

The American president, Joe Biden, used his address at the U.S. climate leadership, to lead with the European Union the so-called Global Methane Pledge.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said in a statement it was proposing "comprehensive new protections to sharply reduce pollution from the oil and natural gas industry."

"The proposed rule would reduce 41 million tons of methane emissions from 2023 to 2035, the equivalent of 920 million metric tons of carbon dioxide," the EPA said in a statement.

This isn’t the first time EPA has regulated oil and gas methane, the Obama administration has attempted in 2016; however, the rules are more difficult this time.

“EPA is addressing existing sources from the oil and natural gas industry nationwide, in addition to updating rules for new sources, to ensure robust and lasting cuts in pollution across the country. By building on existing technologies and encouraging innovative new solutions, we are committed to a durable final rule that is anchored in science and the law, that protects communities living near oil and natural gas facilities, and that advances our nation’s climate goals under the Paris Agreement,” said EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan in the statement.
