Mubadala Energy expands Andaman Sea position
Abu Dhabi-headquartered Mubadala Energy has today announced two major achievements in its ongoing exploration activities in the Andaman Sea, further solidifying its presence in the region.
In partnership with Harbour Energy, Mubadala Energy has been awarded the Central Andaman licence by Indonesia’s oil and gas regulator, MIGAS, as part of the latest Indonesian licensing round. Harbour Energy will hold a 60% operating interest, while Mubadala Energy will retain a 40% stake. This new acquisition enhances Mubadala Energy’s strategic growth in the Andaman Sea, providing additional exploration potential in the basin.
Additionally, Mubadala Energy has successfully completed its South Andaman drilling campaign, which included the appraisal of the Layaran discovery. The campaign involved four wells – Layaran-, Tangkulo-1, Layaran-2, and Layaran-2ST1 – and confirmed the multi-trillion cubic feet (TCF) potential of the Andaman Sea basin. The exploration and appraisal activities leveraged advanced technology and deep-water drilling capabilities, ensuring both efficiency and safety.
Adnan Bu Fateem, Chief Operating Officer at Mubadala Energy, commented on the developments: “Securing the Central Andaman block is a significant strategic step that will unlock further potential opportunities. By capitalising on our operational expertise and deep understanding of the basin, we are well positioned to realise the potential of both South and Central Andaman. We look forward to working with our partners and government stakeholders to develop these projects.”
Abdulla Bu Ali, President Director for Indonesia at Mubadala Energy, also highlighted the importance of the campaign's success: “We are delighted to have completed this drilling campaign safely and successfully. This is not only a win for our team but also a crucial milestone for our company, supporting Indonesia’s energy transition and energy security goals.”
The successful multi-well campaign in South Andaman and Andaman II has confirmed significant discovered resources in the region. Mubadala Energy and its partners are now formulating a strategy to rapidly develop these resources, which are expected to play a critical role in the energy landscape of both Indonesia and Southeast Asia.
These milestones underscore Mubadala Energy's commitment to contributing to Indonesia’s energy security while positioning the company for future growth in the region.
